disc or drum
A disc brake has a flat metal disc on the wheel and a caliper that squeezes it. It uses brake pads (pastillas) and brake fluid.

A drum brake is a closed round hub with an arm or a cable on the side. It uses brake shoes (bandas) and no fluid.

Many small motorcycles have a disc at the front and a drum at the rear. Pads and shoes are never mixed on one wheel.
