counting teeth and links
Most sprockets have their tooth count stamped on the face, often with a T: "14T" on the front one, "42T" on the rear one. If it is worn off, put a chalk mark on one tooth and count round once.

The front sprocket is the small one at the gearbox, under a cover by the left footrest; the rear one is the large one on the wheel.
- 02
To count chain links, count the rollers all the way round: each roller is one link. Most road chains have an even number, between about 100 and 130 on small and medium motorcycles.
- 03
The chain size (for example 428) is stamped on the side plates of the links.
